Last year we started to deliver significant changes and substantial investments to schools across Australia. The development of a National School Curriculum, a renewed emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy, investment in teacher quality and making sure those school communities who are finding it tough, are given new resources to make a difference and give everyone an opportunity to get a quality education.
We started all of this as the global financial crisis started to descend on Australia. At the beginning of this year and recognising that we need to stimulate the economy through public investment, the Rudd Government embarked on the biggest school rebuilding program in Australia’s history. Building the Education Revolution not only allows us to make a once in a lifetime investment in schools, or as I like to think of them the engine room of our future prosperity, it allows local trades people and local businesses to build school libraries and halls and make sure schools are maintained properly. This construction activity will be happening over the next two to three years.
Schools are everywhere, in every local community. It means that these capital works projects support local jobs, so during these difficult economic times, the Rudd
Government has made an investment for the future and an investment now in supporting jobs. And that is what the Governments Nation Building and Jobs economic stimulus package is all about, supporting local jobs and enhancing our productivity for the future.
