A typical passenger car of today contains more than 15000separate, individual parts that must work together. These parts can be grouped into four into major categories:engine ,body, chassis and electrical equipment, rederredto Fig.1-3.The engine acts as the power unit locaed normally at the front of the car, followed immediately by a clutch, gear box, propeller shaft, universal joint, differential, back axle, etc.Internal combustion engine is most common on automobiles. It obtins its power by burning liquid fuel inside the enhine eylinder .There are two typos of enhine :gasoline(also called a spark-ig-nition engine)and diesel(also caled a compression-ignition engine). Both engines are called heat engines.Theburning fuel generates heat which causes thw gas inside the cylindet to increase its pressure and supply power to rotale ashaft connected tk the transmission.
