Exercises 2a: Person moves and camera remains static. Using an image from a classic painting, reproduce the style with a subject who moves from one light source to another. Camera must be locked down and can only pan or tilt. 3-5 shots no more than 30 seconds. Shoot it naturally (see readings).
Include the following analysis (without a thoughtful analysis, you’ll fail the assignment):
1)
The Title of your project (with your name)
2)
An image of a classic painting you’re using as the basis of inspiration for your framing and composition in this exercise. Place this in the Word document, centered below the title.
3)
An artistic justification of why you’re choosing your particular subject (it should not be random); either a fiction scenario or documentary moment should have some kind of meaning for you.
4)
The story you’re suggesting to your audience with this subject and how you’re lighting it. This should be a one or two line summary that involves the central need of the character.
5)
Floor plan analysis of how you’ll use lighting (the lighting plot). Note key, fill, back, background lights. Include camera and performer placement.
6)
Shoot 3-5 shots (30-60 seconds), include at least two different shot sizes covered in the readings, change your camera angles for each shot, and suggest a story to your audience. NO DIALOGUE. NO SOUND DESIGN. No camera movement is allowed in this exercise, although you may set up different camera positions for angles.
7)
When completed, take one still and engage in the kind of analysis found in The Filmmaker’s Eye (for example, p. 91 and 92). Place the still in Word or Photoshop and use text boxes to write comments, as well as lines, circles, and arrows to point out your composition elements. Point out and justify your composition, and include lens choice (wide, normal, or long), depth of field choice, placement of the performers, and lighting choices as they all relate to the story.
