However, for millions of Americans, depression is a more serious, sometimes even life-threatening situation. Most serious depressions are reactions to stressful life events-loss of a job or a spouse, serious financial setback,a serious illness or injury, the end of a love affair. After a reasonable number of weeks or months, most such depressions usually lift and the world and life begin to seem brighter.
But for some people, depression is a recurring phenomenon that is provoked by events that others seem to weather with little difficulty or get over very quickly. And for others, depression happens "out of the blue," unrelated to any particular situation, and totally incapacitates the victims. Many accomplished people suffered from severe depression, including Sigmund Freud, Abraham Lincoln, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Winston Churchill and the astronaut,Edwin E.Aldrin.
