只会直译，仅供参考。A step forward is success，a step backward is failure, staying put, you'll achieve nothing. 感觉用for不太好啊，因为for有目的，原因的意思，中文的“则”表示结果的意思，所以在逻辑上有点怪怪的吧。“守”的话感觉上面有人用的waiting还挺贴切的，原文有“停在原地守候，什么都不做”的意思吧。
