As a novel material surface modification technology, plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) has been paid more and more attentions and has a promisng future in the material field. Its process characteristics、principles and mechanisms’ evolution、process diagnosis、structure、performance and application of the treated materials are summarized to reveal the recent researches. The problems and development directions of PEO in the surface modification technology are also presented.
