1859年11月3日，达尔文的科学名著《物种起源》出版了。这一天，伦敦街头的几家书店门前，人声鼎沸，挤满了许多前来购买这本刚出版的新书的读者。初版的1250册新书，当天就被争购一空。　　这本观点新奇、内容独特的著作一出版，立即在英国掀起轩然大波：有些人兴高采烈，拍手称赞；有些人恼羞成怒，暴跳如雷；更多的人则把它当成奇闻传说，到处宣扬。达尔文的剑桥大学老师、地质学家塞茨威克写信给达尔文说：“当我读着你的这本书时，感到痛苦多于快乐。书中有些部分使我觉得好笑，有些部分则使我忧愁。”他甚至还在杂志上发表不署名的文章，讽刺挖苦达尔文的学说是企图“用一串气泡做成一条坚固的绳索”。
一位美国地质学家则攻击达尔文的著作是“恶作剧”，一批教会首领对达尔文的著作更是咬牙切齿，恨之入骨，企图组织反进化论者群起而攻之。他们有人写匿名信威胁达尔文：“你是英国最危险的人！”“打倒达尔文！”一场大论战已经不可避免了。
