Thanksgiving Day is a holiday in the USA. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. On Thanksgiving Day family members and friends get together for a turkey(火鸡) dinner. People who live in the cities, if their relatives live out of town, leave work early on Wednesday afternoon and drive their cars to distant places for a family reunion(团聚). Many people also the Friday of and make it a long weekend because most Americans do not work on Saturdays or Wednesdays. During the holiday, travel between big cities can be a headache.
The tradition(传统) of the Thanksgiving’s holiday began in 1621 when the first English settlers arrived in the New World. They did not have enough food, and the Indians helped the white men and taught them how to grow corn and other vegetables. So, in the autumn after they came to America, they had a good harvest. The English settlers decided to celebrate, and they invited their Indian neighbors(邻居) to a big feast(宴会) in order to give thanks to them for their help and to the God.
