Cor pulmonale was defined in clinical terms as the presence of peripheral oedema in association with chronic obstructive lung disease for which no other cause could be found. None of the patients studied had clinical evidence of cor pulmonale and none of them was studied during an exacerbation of their chronic obstructive lung disease.
