The decades between 1880 and 1920 have been of great interest to historians of architecture in Australia. Conrad Hamann says that nationalism became a motivating force in Australian architectural thought during this time and this renewed an interest in creating a distinctive national architectural style for Australia. Hamann describes the rise in popularity of the American Romanesque and Shingle style in Australia, and explains how, during the 1900s and 1910s, “radicals” such as George Sydney Jones and Robert Collins continued the search for a national style by experimenting with flat roofs, open plans and cuboid forms (fig.1). Architects began to break loose from British influences by recognising similarities in history and landscape between Australia and America. J. M. Freeland says that after Federation, Australian eyes increasingly turned eastward for example in all fields. Australians saw their country as similar in size and potential to the burgeoning republic whose origins, background and history were so like their own. We can consider the shift in orientation away from British sources as the enterprising work of a group of architects who began to adopt a nationalistic approach to architecture.
Even when historians have described the trafficking of images and information through the architectural press, architectural discourse is generally treated as an autonomous field without attachment to other types of discourses and practices. When Hamann noted that “Australian historians have been reluctant to examine, on any wide scale, the verbal expression of architects” feelings he was certainly right in saying that the nationalist manifestoes of these architects were frequently bathetic, racist, or harbouring dreams of world domination. What is of interest is how these manifestoes may trouble, diverge from, or contradict existing accounts of nationalism in Australian architectural history. For Hamman, however, the appearance of racial concerns and imperial tendencies are only footnotes to the common motive that linked different movements at the time: the search for an Australian architecture.
