Instrumentation Systems Assignment
Introduction
During this course we have examined the operation of a number of instrumentation systems, breaking them down into 3 or more sub-systems, and analysing the accuracy and gain of the complete system in terms of the static sensitivities.
For this assignment you will be required to write a report, no longer than 6 sides A4, on one of the following systems:
An X-Y position display for a milling machine
A load cell power and torque measuring and display system for an engine dynamometer
A thermocouple tyre pyrometer
Your report should be a complete analysis of all parts of the system, including a description of the operation of all basic sensing, signal conditioning and display elements.You should also give the units for the static sensitivity and range of each element in the system, and from an analysis of the errors of each of these make an estimate of the overall system accuracy.
Tasks & Mark Scheme
To write this report you will need to use independent learning.You will therefore need to carry out research, using the library, your own books, your lecture notes and the Internet.The report is to contain the following aspects:
Introduction
A descriptive introduction to the measuring system you have chosen
Analysis
A detailed discussion of what each element in the system does, and showing how the elements link together to form an effective system.
Calculations
A set of estimated calculations based on any data you can find about the system, showing its sensitivity and range
Conclusion
A discussion of the effectiveness of the measuring system, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages when compared with other methods of making similar measurements.
Marks scheme
The marks for the assignment will be broken down as follows:
System element operation – 30%
Complete system operation – 20%
Calculations and reasonable estimations – 30%
Writing a formal technical report – 20%

Completion of this assignment will give students an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to;
Describe the operation of a system with the aid of block diagrams
Quantify the static performance of an instrumentation system
Write an effective formal written report
Submission
The report is to be handed in during the lecture on Thursday 11th May.
