Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processors
Installing Oracle* software
Symptom(s):
Oracle* will not install
EngineStart.exe error
Error: EngineStart.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows*. You will need to restart the program.
Cause:
The Just-In-Time.dll driver may not properly
recognize the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor,
and may generate an error when executed on the
Pentium 4 processor platform.
Solution:
If you receive the EngineStart.exe error or if
Oracle* will not install on the Pentium(R) 4
processor platform, look for the symcjit.dll
driver on your system. It should be newer than 3.10.0.107.
Check with the manufacturer of your software application for updates.
Here is a workaround for the Oracle installer/JIT
issues on the Pentium(R) 4 processor.
1. Install the latest Windows* 2000 Service Pack patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/
2. Create a temporary directory on your Pentium 4
processor server (e.g. \TEMP).
3. Copy the contents of the Oracle* Server CD to
the temporary directory created in step 2.
4. Search the directory structure created in step 2
for the existence of the filename SYMCJIT.DLL.
5. Rename each copy of the SYMCJIT.DLL to SYMCJIT.OLD.
6. Run the SETUP.EXE from the \TEMP\install\win32
directory and install Oracle 8.1.x.
