you can do that.
if hfs, you must temporarily unmount the file system. then use extendfs to make the additional extents available for use.
if jfs without on-line jfs product, it can be extended just the same way as that of hfs.
if jfs with on-line jfs product, it can be extened without extending it. use fsadm command.
