"To me, the second Dutch goal should not have been allowed, simple as that," Houllier told a Lisbon press conference yesterday. "Van Nistelrooy was in an offside position and stayed there. There’s no point in hiding from the facts. The rule is supposed to favour positive play and create more goals but when you gain a huge advantage in a seemingly passive offside position, it should not be allowed.
"He’s very clever, he does it all the time at Manchester United. But against the Czechs, it’s not as if he came back behind the defenders. This time, the defenders had pushed up and he didn’t have time. He certainly influenced the game when he got the ball and scored."
